Dogs CBD Lab Results: Why They Are Important & How to Read Them

Dogs CBD Lab Results

When looking to buy CBD products, you might have noticed that reputable companies have a lab report available on their website. This lab report contains information about the composition of the CBD products you’re buying. But how do you read a CBD lab report? What should you look out for, and what does it mean?

Why are CBD lab results important?

At the moment, CBD products aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For this reason, it’s very important to look for CBD products with a lab report. This report will tell you what you need to know about these products.

Unfortunately, some companies advertise CBD products that contain little to no CBD. The FDA has actually issued numerous warning letters to some of these companies for making “unsubstantiated claims” about their products. To avoid wasting your money on dodgy CBD, it’s important to look for verified, high-quality products.

It’s important to look for CBD products that are “third-party lab tested”. In other words, the report is written by an independent lab that isn’t a part of the business that’s creating or selling the products.

How to read CBD lab results

In the lab, the CBD oil is tested with a chromatograph. The chromatograph measures the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavinoids present in the oil.

A lab report on CBD products will:

  • Confirm that there’s CBD in the actual product. CBD might be listed under “cannabidiol”.
  • List the other cannabinoids found in the products. Full-spectrum CBD oil should contain a few different cannabinoids, while CBD isolate should contain little to no cannabinoids. Note that some cannabinoids aren’t tested by labs, and they might not show up in the oil. Some of cannabinoids include:
    • Tetrahydracannabidiol, or THC. If you don’t want to get high or fail a drug test, make sure there’s only trace amounts of THC, or no THC at all. For dogs, it’s best to avoid CBD products with any THC in it.
    • Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA)
    • Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA)
    • Cannabinol (CBN)
    • Cannabigerol (CBG)
    • Cannabichromene (CBC)
  • Test to see whether there are any harmful substances. Organic CBD oil should not contain any of these. These substances include:
    • Pesticides
    • Herbicides
    • Hormones
    • Non-organic fertilizers
  • Test for chemical solvents. Avoid CBD products that contain polyethylene glycol (PEG) or propylene glycol (PG), as these can be very harmful to your body.

How to ensure your CBD oil is top-quality

When it comes to buying CBD oil, reading third-party lab results is a great start.
It’s also a good idea to:

  • Google the manufacturer. Have they had any past incidents where they made unsubstantiated claims about their products?
  • Read online reviews. Take these with a pinch of salt, as some people expect CBD to dramatically change their dogs overnight and it simply doesn’t work that way. However, reviews can give you a good idea of their customers’ opinions of them.
  • Speak to your vet. A CBD-informed vet can help you choose the best possible brand for your pup.
  • Read the company website. Do they make exaggerated or unsubstantiated claims about CBD?
  • Look at their social media presence. Do they post fake news about CBD?

At the end of the day, your dog deserves the very best when it comes to their health and wellbeing. That’s why every dog owner needs to learn how to read CBD lab test results and to understand why third-party lab tests are essential for CBD dog products.
