Loss of appetite can occur for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to diarrhea, vomiting, anxiety, depression, pain, tumors, cancer, etc.
Here, we’re going to define what loss of appetite is; then, we’ll get into the specific causes and treatment methods you can implement to help your dog start eating again.
What is Loss of Appetite?
Loss of appetite is defined just as it sounds: A loss of appetite.
Now, we don’t want to get too wrapped up in what a loss of appetite is, as the definition is too easy not to understand. Instead, we want to focus on what could potentially cause a loss of appetite.
What is the Cause of Loss of Appetite?
Some reasons are obvious as to why your dog has lost his or her appetite; others are not as obvious. Below are some of the most common instances:
Illness: If your dog doesn’t feel well, it’s probably that he or she does not want to eat food. It works the same way when we are sick, so why wouldn’t it work that way when they are sick? Any of the following sicknesses can result in loss of appetite: bacterial infections, viral infections, urinary tract infection, kidney failure, and cancer. If lack of appetite persists, bring your dog to the vet immediately.
Eating Something They Shouldn’t: Dogs get into things they shouldn’t. When they do this, they develop an upset stomach 9 times out of 10. Such substances may include rotten food from the garbage (because of it smells good, it probably tastes good, or so they think). What’s more is they may get a hold of something toxic to their bodies, like chocolate; this, in turn, will make them sick.
Other instances that may cause your dog to lose his or her appetite consist of too much stress, injured body part, or natural aging. Try to keep your furry friend stress-free, take care of his or her injuries, and make him or her comfortable whenever they are in pain from aging.
Traditional Treatment of Loss of Appetite
You cannot choose a treatment method until you know what the underlying cause of the problem is. If the loss of appetite is due to your dog’s illness, you may need to change their diet and implement prescription medications. If your dog’s loss of appetite is because of their pickiness and behavior patterns, you may want to get them on a routine eating schedule. The list can go on; have a word with your veterinarian to determine the best course of action.
Can CBD Help Loss of Appetite in Dogs?
CBD oil is known to speed up a dog’s metabolism, which will inadvertently cause them to be hungry more often. Once the hunger sets in, your dog’s appetite will increase tenfold.
Do not give too much of the supplement, though, as this could speed up their metabolism at an unhealthy rate.
CBD Dosage for Dogs with Loss of Appetite
There’s usually an underlying cause of why your dog has lost his or her appetite. To help increase his or her appetite, you’ll need to know what that underlying cause is. Once that’s complete, you’ll be able to determine a dosage that is more fitting to your dog’s needs.
Determining CBD dosage is relatively easy once you know the cause behind the loss of appetite. For instance, if it’s because your furry friend is nauseous, you’ll want to administer the supplement only when this symptom arises. On the other hand, if it’s because your furry friend has cancer, a daily dosage may be more fitting.
Always keep in mind that your dog’s size, weight, and breed will also play a part in finding a firm dosage.
