What can I give my dog for pain? 8 natural pain remedies for dogs

What can I give my dog for pain

Every dog lover knows how heartbreaking it is to see their four-legged friend in pain. If your dog has arthritis or another painful condition, it could affect their mobility, mood, and behavior. Fortunately, there are many remedies for pain in dogs.
Remember to always consult your vet before giving your dog new medication or a supplement, even if it’s available over the counter.
Here are a few things you can give your dog to relieve pain.

1) Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

Humans commonly use Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to soothe stiffness, pain, and swelling, but certain forms of NSAIDs are appropriate for dogs. Canine NSAIDs include:

  • carprofen (Novox or Rimadyl)
  • deracoxib (Deramaxx)
  • firocoxib (Previcox)
  • meloxicam (Metacam)

You should never, ever give your dog NSAIDs designed for humans. You also shouldn’t give your dogs any medication without your veterinarian’s approval. Always give your dog the exact dosage needed for their weight.

While most dogs don’t seem to experience any side effects from NSAIDs, it has been known to cause liver and kidney damage in some dogs, as well as cardiovascular complications. To avoid this, many dog owners prefer using natural remedies before trying NSAIDs.

2) Tramadol

Often given to aging dogs with chronic pain, tramadol is an opiate that reduces pain. It works similarly to morphine and other opiates. While very effective, tramadol has a few side effects, including:

  • Nausea, vomiting, constipation, and/or diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tremors
  • Dizziness
  • Seizures
  • Anxiety

However, these side-effects aren’t very common.

To avoid these side effects, tramadol must be given exactly to your vet’s instructions as the dosage is essential. When misused, it can be dangerous. Carefully monitor your dog for reactions when you give them tramadol, especially if they haven’t had it before.

3) Turmeric

A powerful, science-backed anti-inflammatory, turmeric can treat pain in dogs. Turmeric contains curcumin, a proven anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. This makes it perfect for dogs with painful inflammatory conditions.

A 2012 paper showed that curcumin provides pain relief for dogs with osteoarthritis. The paper concluded that it’s a useful complementary treatment, which means it’s a great addition to your dog’s diet.

Turmeric is safe for dogs and effective for both canines and humans struggling with pain. You can bake your dog some turmeric-rich dog treats or buy them curcumin supplements. If you’re giving your dog turmeric directly, add some black pepper and healthy fat like coconut oil to help them absorb it properly.

4) Ginger

Much like turmeric, ginger is a root that has many healing benefits for dogs and humans alike.

A 2010 paper showed that gingerol, the active ingredient in ginger, can reduce pain and inflammation in humans with rheumatoid arthritis. A further study showed it could help people with osteoarthritis. While studies haven’t been conducted on dogs, all evidence suggests it should help reduce pain and inflammation in dogs.

Ginger is safe for dogs and can be added to their diets.

5) Glucosamine and chondroitin

Glucosamine and chondroitin are both relatively safe supplements given to dogs with arthritis and other painful conditions. These joint supplements are often used together to improve joint mobility and reduce pain and inflammation.

However, it’s important to remember that the FDA or similar authorities do not regulate supplements. Sadly, some tests have shown that certain glucosamine and chondroitin are sometimes contaminated with toxic substances. So, while the actual supplements are safe, the toxic contamination makes them unsafe. To avoid this, always use a high-quality supplement from a reputable company. Speak to your vet before giving your dog anything – including supplements – as they’ll advise you on the best brands and dosage.

6) Oil

If your dog is struggling with joint pain, certain fatty oils can help with joint pain. These oils are also excellent for your dog’s coat, skin, and overall health.

Both fish oil and coconut oil have a range of benefits. Scientific research shows that these oils, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, can reduce pain associated with arthritis and joint disease in dogs. Research shows that these oils also reduce inflammation.

Throw some fish oil or coconut oil over your dog’s food, or buy them treats that include healthy oils. Alternatively, you can make your own dog treats enriched with oil.

7) CBD oil

One of the most effective natural treatments for pain is cannabidiol oil, known as CBD oil. CBD oil works well for both humans and dogs, with very few side effects.

CBD oil reduces pain in dogs by affecting the endocannabinoid system present in every mammal’s body. It affects the pain receptors in our brains, helping both dogs and humans feel pain less intensely. A 2018 study on dogs with osteoarthritis concluded that CBD oil reduced their pain and increased their activity levels. There are also many other benefits of CBD oil for dogs: it can help maintain a healthy coat, reduce anxiety, and even prevent seizures in dogs.

What’s great is that CBD oil is safe for dogs, according to the research. It won’t get your dog ‘high,’ and it has minimal side effects. The main side effect of CBD oil is sleepiness, but if you notice that your dog is displaying any other major behavioral issues, contact your vet.

Always choose a high-quality CBD oil and research it thoroughly before giving it to your dog. It’s also imperative that you give your furry friend the right dosage of CBD oil. For more information on CBD oil for dogs, read our articles.

There are a multitude of remedies for pain in dogs, both natural and conventional. Every dog is different, and every dog has different needs – so what suits one dog might not suit the next one. Remember, always speak to your vet before giving your dog pain medication or supplements of any kind. This will help you avoid any potential side effects.

Hopefully, with these pain remedies for dogs, your fur-baby will get some relief and feel like their old selves again.
